The days of the faceless radiologist reading films in a dark room are over. There has been a paradigm shift in radiology and Dr. John S. Farrell, a diagnostic imaging specialist at Advanced Imaging Specialists, is at the forefront.
As a diagnostic imaging specialist with advanced training in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Dr. Farrell also subspecializes in breast imaging, which includes digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and breast biopsies.
“Advances in the practice of medical imaging allow me to have extensive patient contact throughout the day, especially in the realm of breast imaging. Any patient I biopsy has my cell phone number to contact me directly,” he explains.
He also teaches medical students at The Commonwealth Medical College, and says it is an honor and a privilege to do so. One recent highlight included was presenting the results of a TCMC project at the Radiological Society of North America’s annual meeting.
Dr. Farrell’s father is also a radiologist and stressed a life and career of direct service to others. Dr. Farrell followed in his father’s footsteps and also cites his mother as “an outstanding role model.” “She always gives very clear, practical advice and has never steered me wrong. She is also a voracious reader, especially of newspapers. She is a living, breathing Google search,” he says.
He would never discourage young men and women from a career in medicine due to current uncertainties, because medicine is always in need of bright new minds to strengthen the field.
His wife, who is his best friend and strongest advocate, is a great example of integrity, strength, compassion and love.
“I believe we live in the best place in the world, and it’s an honor for me to deliver medical care to the residents of northeastern Pennsylvania,” he says.
