Nicole A. Barber loves northeastern Pennsylvania. That’s why she returned here after college and is now director of Leadership Lackawanna. Her passion for the area, and her job is evident in her demeanor — always bubbly, outgoing, kind, and encouraging.
“If you truly love what you do and where you are, that will shine through. When I speak about Leadership Lackawanna, my excitement is contagious. Being happy and staying positive always makes a difference,” she says.
Barber is a one-person show when it comes to Leadership Lackawanna. As director, she is responsible for the entire operation, which includes planning and implementing three different leadership and professional development programs, various fund-raisers, mixers, and workshops, overseeing 11 committees and creating the newsletter and website. “I have an outstanding board of directors and numerous working committees that help me accomplish these tasks, for which I am grateful.”
Admitting to having a bit of a type A, overachieving personality, she said she is at least aware of it. She jokes that some of her committee members laugh at her when she turns into “Commander Nikki.”
She is extremely grateful to her Cadette Girl Scout leader Terry Wise, who always believed in her and taught very valuable lessons. “I am a determined person who always sticks with her commitments and decisions. Terry helped instill these qualities,” notes Barber.
This January, Barber will make her third trip to Haiti as part of a mission team organized and operated by the Haiti Partnership, a sub-division under the United Methodist Church.
She is grateful for the support of her parents, Bob and Cathy; siblings, Jason and Amanda; niece, Dylan; and her boyfriend, Ed.
