On March 11, nurses at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital filed charges against the hospital with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The nurses, represented by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP), are alleging that the for-profit hospital is bargaining in bad faith and has made illegal, unilateral changes to existing terms of employment.

An element of the nurses’ union charge, the nurses allege, is that the hospital has refused to continue a previously negotiated wage scale that is in existence. The nurses say that because the union and the hospital are still in contract negotiations, and no impasse has been reached, the hospital is obligated to maintain the current wage scale, which they have refused to do, the nurses allege.

The charges filed with the NLRB will be handled at a regional office, which will assign an investigator to the case.
