Accreditations

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, and Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, were recently awarded three-year accreditations for their trauma programs from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation. Receiving a three-year re-accreditation, Geisinger Wyoming Valley qualifies as a Level II Trauma Center. Geisinger Medical Center was re-accredited as a Level I Trauma Center. A trauma center has 24-hour access to a team of specially trained healthcare providers who have expertise in the care of severely injured patients. Both campuses utilize a multidisciplinary approach to trauma, with physicians and staff from departments including surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, vascular surgery, critical care, plastic surgery, pediatrics, neurology and others working together to provide care for patients.

William J. Grant, chief executive officer of Hildebrandt Learning Centers LLC, (HLC) headquartered in Dallas, announced that the King’s/St. Mary’s Developmental Child Care Center, located in Wilkes-Barre, has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) — the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. To earn NAEYC accreditation, King’s/St. Mary’s went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC early childhood program standards and more than 400 related accreditation criteria. The program received NAEYC accreditation after a site visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the 10 program standards. NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.

The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation announced that Schuylkill Medical Center East Norwegian Street and Schuylkill Medical Center South Jackson Street are accredited Level III Trauma Centers effective Nov. 1. The accreditation at East Norwegian Street is a new accreditation. South Jackson Street is a reaccreditation. Trauma centers are hospitals with resources immediately available to provide efficient surgical intervention to reduce the likelihood of death or permanent disability to injured patients. Accredited trauma centers must be continuously prepared to treat the most serious life threatening and disabling injuries. In Pennsylvania, there are three levels of accredited trauma centers which must meet a stringent set of requirements. A Level III Trauma Center is meant to serve the needs of patients in rural areas of a state. The focus is to quickly diagnose and treat mild to moderate injuries. More severely injured patients are quickly stabilized and transported to higher level trauma centers. To be considered for Level III accreditation, a facility must: Be located in a county without a Level I or II Trauma Center; be greater than 25 miles from an accredited Level I or II trauma center; have a comprehensive emergency department; have 4,000 patients admitted through its emergency department per year; have the capability to manage initial care with a general surgeon response time within 30 minutes; have a resuscitation team organized for severely injured patients; facilitate mandatory transfers for severely injured patients. The trauma programs at both medical centers underwent an extensive review this past summer as part of the accreditation process. Visit www.schuylkillhealth.com.

Jean A. Dyer, Ph.D., dean of the Misericordia University College of Health Sciences, recently had her research published in the book, Field Dependent and Independent: Self-Reported Characteristics in Immigrant and Adult Learners.’’ The study focused on the cognitive learning style preference of three culturally diverse populations —Russian, Sudanese and Dominican — in an effort to expand upon present teaching and learning information related to community health promotion and disease prevention education. Due to demographic changes in the country, health care delivery processes must respond by shifting from a primarily monocultural to a multicultural focus, according to Dr. Dyer’s published work. Dr. Dyer is the dean of the Misericordia University College of Health Sciences, which features bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral-level degrees in nursing, medical imaging, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Dan Kimbrough, assistant professor of communications at Misericordia University, is among 20 people who have been chosen to participate in the 21st Annual Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation Faculty Seminar (ATAS) in Los Angeles on Nov. 10-14. Professors who are selected for the distinguished seminar apply by submitting an application and a letter that outlines their professional qualifications and accomplishments, and how the seminar will benefit their students. A selection committee then chooses 20 faculty members for the five-day seminar.

John N. Mellon, Ed.D., associate professor of business at Misericordia University, revised the chapter, The Quest for Quality,’’ in the third edition of the recently published book, Leadership and Management in the Hospitality Industry,’’ written by Robert H. Woods, Ph.D., CHRE and Judy Z. King. In Dr. Mellon’s chapter, he underscores the importance of quality to the hospitality industry. One problem confronting the industry, according to Dr. Mellon, is that hospitality employees are typically not aware that they are manufacturing a product — service. Oftentimes, hospitality employees have no perception of their work being a product or that their jobs have an impact on the success of the property. He also examines the rationale for and evolution of quality management by examining the contributions of two giants in the industry — W. Edwards Deming and Joseph Juran. Published by the American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute, the third chapter concludes by reviewing the impact and contributions of the International Organization of Standardization in the industry’s quest for quality.

James Siberski, M.S., assistant professor at Misericordia University, received the Father Matthew Jankola Lifetime Commitment to Servant Leadership award from the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Oct. 25 in Danville. Siberski was recognized for his commitment to elder care, according to the religious congregation that was founded by Father Jankola in Scranton in 1909. The congregation also honored high school juniors and seniors who model Christ-like service in their parish and community.

Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne) has been selected by the Rendell administration to represent Pennsylvania at a special Policy Institute, Changing the Outcome: Achieving and Sustaining a Safe Reduction in Foster Care, in November that will concentrate on improving outcomes for and reducing the number of children in foster care. Mundy’s work in helping to ensure the protection of Pennsylvania foster children includes legislation she introduced last session known as the Children in Substitute Care Act, which addresses the basic needs that weigh heavily in a foster child’s quality of life. Those needs include the right to live in a safe and healthy home; access to routine medical care; access to a quality education; access to life skills training to ease the transition to adulthood; ability to express one’s ethnicity and culture; and safety from all types of mental, physical, sexual or emotional harassment and abuse. Additionally, Mundy is an active member of The Porch Light Project, whose mission is to spearhead public policy reforms that ensure all children grow up in families where their needs for safety, permanency and well-being are met.

State Rep. Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne) also was presented with the Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association’s 2009 Assisted Living Advocate of the Year award. Mundy received the award in recognition of her outstanding service to older people and their families in the advancement of the assisted living philosophy of care and services. Last session, Mundy was instrumental in the passage of the assisted living licensure law, which made sweeping improvements to assisted living residency in the Commonwealth by defining assisted living and establishing licensing requirements for assisted living residences so that more older Pennsylvanians can age in place. The Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association is a professional nonprofit trade association representing personal care homes and assisted living communities – both for-profit and nonprofit – that range from small individually owned facilities to large state and national corporations.

DEP did not receive documentation that the cleanup was finished until Oct. 29, 2007. The fine was paid to the Pennsylvania Clean Streams Fund, which pays for cleanups across the state.
