For David Gargone, EdD, assistant professor of business at Misericordia University, it’s important for his career and personal life to complement each other.

“I love being a part of the Misericordia University community because of the family atmosphere and all of the activities available on campus,” he said, adding that he has worked hard to prepare for a career that gives him the flexibility and downtime needed to raise a family.

As an assistant professor in the business department at MU, he is currently charged with teaching sports management courses, developing curriculum, and cultivating opportunities within the local and regional sports industry for internships and professional development opportunities for our students.

He serves as a student advisor for the Sport Management Association and recently started the Sport Management Advisory Council, a collection of local sport leaders with some of the top sport franchises, including the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

“I feel my most important responsibility is to prepare my students for a successful transition from college student to sport management professional,” he said. “It’s not good enough anymore to just go to college and get your degree—you need to be active on campus, maintain a high GPA, and build a strong resume before you even graduate.
Even more importantly, young professionals should seek out experience, either through internships, shadowing, or part-time employment in their field.”

Young professionals should also be patient as they develop their careers. Any opportunity should be considered a good opportunity in the current job market.
Gargone said his father was influential, by demonstrating the importance of hard work and education.

He and wife, Kelli, have a daughter, Isla Belle.
