Quandel Enterprises Inc., a local construction firm has announced the acquisition of J. Vinton Schafer & Sons Inc., of Abingdon, Md. Both companies are leaders in their respective construction markets.

The announcement was made jointly by Noble C. Quandel, chairman and CEO of Quandel, and Ronald E. Knowles, P.E., president of Schafer.

Quandel emphasized the strategic benefits of their merger. “Schafer’s strength and excellent reputation in market sectors throughout Maryland and Virginia give us a new level of opportunity throughout the Mid Atlantic region”, said Mr. Quandel.

At the time of the acquisition, Quandel and Schafer were involved in the construction or management of more than $700 million in projects. Quandel was recently ranked among the 100 largest CM firms based on fee in the U.S. by Engineering News Record, an international publication.

Quandel currently has offices in Harrisburg, Wormleysburg, Minersville, Scranton, Wyomissing and Wind Gap, as well as other locations in Columbus and Cincinnati and Chicago. Schafer has been headquartered and will remain in Abingdon, Harford County, Maryland.

Both firms provide a complete range of services, including construction management, general contracting and design-build services. Their projects include public and private schools, institutions of higher learning, health-care facilities, office buildings, sports facilities, manufacturing facilities, commercial buildings, banks, churches and wastewater treatment plants.

Quandel was established in 1882 in the coal region town of Minersville, which is located in Schuylkill County. The company began with very humble beginnings as a lime kiln and building materials supplier using horses and buggies.

Schafer is a third-generation firm that was established in 1919 in Baltimore. Consistently recognized as one of their regions most well established and successful construction companies, Schafer has established itself as a premier provider of construction services throughout Maryland and Virginia, and they were ranked No. 5 by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of the “largest construction and general contracting firms in the Baltimore area."
